Event Description
Des Moines Film, the nonprofit that operates the Varsity Cinema, is turning 10! Founded in 2015 with the mission to grow a vibrant local film culture and community, Des Moines Film has been bringing people together through screenings, events, and meetups long before Varsity Cinema’s 2022 reopening. It all began with a screening of Metropolis at Hoyt Sherman Place in 2015, and now we’re returning to where it all started with another unforgettable presentation of Fritz Lang’s sci-fi masterpiece.
This special screening features a live score performed by Ben Model, one of the nation’s leading silent film accompanists. Model is the resident film accompanist at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Library of Congress, a regular at the TCM Classic Film Festival, and a frequent performer at historic theaters, museums, schools, and festivals across the U.S. and internationally. His work brings silent films to life in ways that are both historically authentic and thrillingly fresh.
VIP Tickets (SOLD OUT) include:
– 6 PM pre-show meet & greet with Ben Model, and Des Moines Film Staff + Board
– One free drink
– Varsity Cinema merch
Join us as we celebrate a decade of film culture in Des Moines with an iconic film, world-class live music, and a night that honors our past while looking toward the future.
